Little Sleep Can Lead To Depression

Depression can be extremely debilitating. It is one of those states of the mind when you almost shut yourself down to the outside world. All your activities come to a halt or minimal and your energy levels sink to the bottom. There are many causes behind why one gets clinical depression. One of them is related to a person’s sleeping habits. It has been found a link between how much one sleeps and his or her level of depression. As with every other thing in life, it is necessary to maintain a balance in your sleeping patterns to facilitate physical and mental well being.

Too much or too little sleep can lead to depression

Sleep is considered to be one of those important ‘activities’ that is essential for the human body and mind to function normally and efficiently. It is considered to be a restorative state and provides complete rest to the body and mind and revitalizes them. It also helps the body to get rid of all the waste matter accumulated inside it and rejuvenate the cells. If you sleep less than necessary, it can cause disturbances in the functioning of the body as well as cause irritation, anxiety and even depression. On the other hand, too much sleep also can lead to a state of inactivity and inertia that too might be a major cause behind depression in some people.

Why sleeping less cause depression

Reduced sleep can be a cause as well as an effect of depression. When someone is diagnosed with clinical depression, it is commonly found that the sleep gets affected. These people experience sleep deprivation and tendencies that resemble insomnia. If you have a sleep deprivation doesn’t necessarily mean that you have depression. However, there is a definite link between sleeping less than normal and depression. An average person needs about 7-8 hours of restful sleep at night. If this need is not fulfilled it might lead to depressive tendencies in the long run.

Oversleeping too can result in depression

Too much of a good thing can lead to trouble. Just as sleeping too little can be a cause behind depression, sleeping for longer hours than the average sleeping limit can also lead to depression. Since human body needs activity for its juices to flow and it to work at its optimal efficiency level, when someone sleeps for more than 8 hours at night, it can lead to a state of inertia and inaction that can lead to a lowered energy and thus depression. Of course, this works both ways. Some people who have clinical depression tend to sleep more than usual.

Keeping a balance is important

Just like other things, sleep should also be in a balanced proportion to facilitate physical, mental and emotional well-being. Sleeping too little or too much should be avoided and you should make sure that you get an adequate amount of sleep during the night. In order to achieve the right balance in your sleeping patterns, it is essential to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle. When the body is functioning normally and the mind is positive and calm, one naturally tends to sleep well without going off-balance. Proper diet, adequate exercise, healthy habits can lead to a state of well-being where sleep is a natural rejuvenation.
