1. Red Fort, Delhi

The Red Fort in Delhi is also known as the “Lal Qila.” This historic fort is made of red sandstone and is one of the symbols of excellent Mughal architecture.  The Lahori Gate is the main entrance to the Red Fort. Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, hoisted the Indian National flag above the Lahori Gate on the 15th of August, 1947.

The Ashram is located on the banks of the Sabarmati River. Also known as the “Harijan Ashram,” the place was home to Mahatma Gandhi for quite some years. It was here that Gandhi formed a school that concentrated on literacy, agriculture, and manual labour. On the 12th of March, 1930, Gandhi launched his famous Dandi March, around 240 miles from the Ashram, against the British Salt Law. 

This day, the Ashram is one of the most inspiring locations associated with Gandhi’s life and his principle of non-violence. It has a museum that preserves Gandhi’s work.

3. Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, Punjab

Jallianwala Bagh is situated close to the Golden Temple in Amritsar. On 13th April, 1919, a peaceful crowd gathered at Jallianwala Bagh to protest against the arrest of two pro-independence activists and also against the Rowlatt Act. The British General, R.E.H. Dyer, surrounded the crowd of protestors with his troops. Blocking the only exit from Jallianwala Bagh, Dyer ordered his troops to open fire on the crowd. Thousands of innocent lives were lost in the massacre, and the incident triggered more anger and hatred against British rule.

4. Jhansi Fort, Uttar Pradesh

The First War of Independence began in 1857. When the Jhansi Fort was captured by the British, Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi battled with them courageously. However, she died in her brave war to protect her kingdom from the British.

5. Aga Khan Palace, Pune, Maharashtra

This magnificent building is connected to Indian independence because it served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi. The Archaeological Survey of India or ASI proclaimed the palace as a site of national importance in 2003.

The Aga Khan Palace covers about 19 acres and is a monument of architectural excellence. The palace also contains many photos of Mahatma Gandhi, which give us some glimpses into the life of this great leader.
