Tips for Enjoying Cruise Vacation

I get it—after a couple of cruises, the buffets blur together, the deck parties feel like déjà vu, and you start dreaming of solid ground. I’ve been there too. But after taking a break from the sea, I gave it one more shot—and surprisingly, I fell in love with cruising all over again. Here’s how I turned the tides and the real benefits of cruising, especially when you feel like you’ve outgrown the whole experience.

1. Pick the Right Cruise—Not the Flashiest One

You don’t have to chase the newest ship with a rollercoaster onboard. Choose a cruise that fits your pace and personality. River cruises, themed sailings, or small luxury liners offer a calmer, more personalized vibe compared to the mega-ships.

2. Set a Personal Intention (Not a To-Do List)

What helped me reconnect with the joy of cruising? I stopped trying to do everything. Instead, I focused on one goal: rest. I scheduled nothing for the first two days and just floated between naps, sunbathing, and quiet time with a book.

3. Redefine Romance or Connection

Whether you’re solo or sailing with your partner, a cruise gives you the rare chance to disconnect from the world. No meetings. No errands. Just time. My partner and I used it as a mini reset. We talked, laughed, and even joined a dance class (which I normally would never do).

4. You Can Cruise Without Feeling ‘Trapped’

Choose itineraries with frequent ports of call if staying on the ship too long wears you out. You’d be surprised how invigorating it feels to step off the ship every morning into a new town, island, or coastline.

5. Eat Like You Mean It (Skip the Buffet!)

One major benefit of cruising is the range of dining options. You don’t have to settle for the endless buffet. Book the chef’s table or enjoy a quiet dinner at a specialty restaurant. Some cruise lines even offer farm-to-table options now.

6. Embrace What’s Changed (Seriously)

Cruises aren’t what they used to be—and that’s a good thing. If you haven’t sailed recently, check out some of the things you won’t see on cruises anymore. Gone are the stuffy dress codes and awkward seating arrangements. Now, there’s more freedom and flexibility than ever before.

7. Use the Sea to Reflect

Even if you’re tired of the pool games and onboard contests, there’s something healing about watching the ocean. Use your time onboard to unplug. I’ve journaled, meditated, and just stood on the balcony in silence. It’s more therapeutic than a spa day.

You don’t need to be a first-timer to enjoy the benefits of cruising. All it takes is a shift in how you approach it. Make it about you—your peace, your pace, and your joy. Even if you’ve said “never again,” you might just surprise yourself.
