Home Remedies to Remove Stains

How often have you had to give away pieces of clothing just because you have spilled a glass of tea on it or managed to get a rust stain on your favorite pair of trousers?Next time your clothes are victims of spills or other accidents that result in stubborn stains, don’t fret. Though it is always better to treat the stains quickly, it’s not always practically possible. Here are some tips to help you remove stains with products you can find in almost every household in the country.

  • Oil: Oil stains are the most stubborn of the lot. Try to wash the stain immediately in hot water with a bit of soap.
  • If it’s still there, then cover the fresh stain with salt or a dry powder such as baby talcum powder or corn starch. Once absorbed, scrape it off.
  • And if the stain still refuses to budge, then treat it directly with vinegar or soak it in rubbing alcohol for 30 minutes.
  • Blood: If you can treat the stain before it sets then vinegar and ammonia work best before laundering. If already set, then soak the stained clothes in cold salted water for 3-4 hours, followed by a detergent wash.
  • Rust: Cover the area with cream of tartar, followed by a soak in hot water and then launder as usual. Vinegar and salt mixed together to form a paste also works similarly.
  • Coffee, tea and juice: Soak the garments in a solution of one unit vinegar to two units’ water and then hang to dry in the sun. Once dried, launder as usual.
  • Grass: Rubbing alcohol is one of the most effective remedies to remove those grass stains. Else, even dabbing the affected area with a cloth soaked in white vinegar would do the trick.
  • Foundation Stains: If you have accidently smudged foundation on your outfit, spray on a little shaving spray and launder as usual.
  • Lipstick Stains: Spray the affected area with hair spray for a few minutes and then toss it into the machine as usual.
  • Red Wine: If the stain the fresh, a few minutes soak in white wine shall do the trick. The other remedy is a long soak in club soda before laundering.
  • Ink: As crazy as it may sound, a soak in hair spray for a few minutes is all it takes to removes those ink stains. You can even try spreading the stain with a paste of cream of tartar and lemon juice and leave it to try in the sun, followed by the usual wash.

So let’s say goodbye to all those stains and cheer to a stain free future.
